| Nehru Stadium: VOC Park : The VOC Park is an interesting place to visit in Coimbatore, especially if you are accompanied by kids. For the young ones, the main attractions within the park include the aquarium, which has a good collection of different species of fish, a mini zoo, and a toy train for joyrides. It is situated at the center of the city, reaching there is not a problem. Tamil Nadu Agriculture University : Five kilometers away from the railway station and located at the foot hills of Nilgiris, the university is one of the best institutions of its kind in South Asia. The university also houses a botanical garden which is the main source of attraction. It is located towards the west of the city centre and is spread over an area of 300 hectares. The garden has a good collection of different species of flowering plants and trees. It is a must visit place for kids. Forest College : The Forest College is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the country. A visit to the College Museum is an interesting experience. This museum has an interesting collection of different minerals, rocks, pests, snakes, insects and fungal diseases that afflict plants and trees. Located about 3.5 km north of Coimbatore Railway Station and Central bus stand, Gandhipuram. Siruvani : Thirty-seven kilometers to the west of the city is located the Siruvani waterfall and dam. Monkey Falls : Located at 65-km from Coimbatore and 27-km from Pollachi on Coimbatore-Pollachi-Valparai Highways are the Monkey Falls, a famous picnic spot. Annamalai Wildlife Sanctuary : Situated near Pollachi at a distance of around 90 km, the Annamalai Wildlife Sanctuary forms an interesting excursion from Coimbatore. The sanctuary, situated at an altitude of 1,400 meters in the Western Ghats, is home to different kind of animals and birds like elephant, gaur, tiger, panther, sloth bear, deer, wild bear, wild dog, porcupine, flying squirrel, jackal, pangolin, civet cat and birds like rocket-tailed drogue, re-whiskered bulbul, black-headed oriole, tree pie, spotted dove, and green pigeon. The Amaravathy reservoir in the Annamalai has a large number of crocodiles. Black Thunder : Black Thunder is situated at a place some 41 Kms from Coimbatore and 40 Kms from Ooty.Fun never ends. Tirupur Kumaran Memorial : Born on 04-10-1904. A stauch freedom fighter who waged a relentless struggle against the British. Deeply involved in Desabandu Youth Movement his patriotic fervour was extraordinary. Beaten mercilessly by police he held on to the flag as if it is his own life. He attained Martyrdom on 11-01-1932. This memorial is situated on Kumaran Salai. It was opened on 07-04-1991 as a mark of respect to the great son of this soil. Kovai Kondattam: This complete family entertainment park with its 33 world-class rides will certainly be an added atraction to visit the cotton city. Vaidehi Waterfalls : It is located 30 kms from coimbatore via. Narasipuram village. It is a fine picnic spot for trekkers.A perennial waterfalls is a major attraction here. Valparai : 104 kms from Coimbatore. It is a small town dominated by tea gardens and estates mostly belonging to the private owners. A viewing point in the Attakatti Village,gives you a picturesque view of the valley and plain. Mudumalai - Wild Life Sanctuary : Mudumalai wildlife reserve is a continuation of the Bandipur National Park. The river Moyar that flows along the border or Tamil Nadu and Karnataka separates the two. The Mysore - Ooty highway runs through the park. The 321 sq. km. reserve is situated in Tamil Nadu. Mudumalai wildlife reserve was the first sanctuary in south India. The terrain is extremely varied with hills, valleys, ravines, watercourses and swamps. The vegetation comprises of tropical moist deciduous forests, dry deciduous forests and scrub forests. Compared to the nearby reserves, the climate is warmer in Mudumalai. Langur, bonnet macaque, tiger, leopard, wild dog, hyena, jackal, sloth bear, elephants, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, Indian muntjac, mouse deer, wild boar, rodent and flying squirrel are part of the wildlife in Mudumalai. It has a rich bird life that includes Malabar trogan, Grey hornbill, crested hawk eagle, crested serpent eagle, etc. The best time to visit the reserve is from February to June. The sanctuary can be reached by road. The nearest railway station is Udakamandalam. The nearest airport is Coimbatore. Accommodation can be arranged at forest rest house, guesthouses at Masinagudi, Kargudi, Abhayaranyam and Theppakkadu. Ooty : Ooty or Udagamandalam (the Tamil version of the original name) rightly described as "Queen of Hill Stations" by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, now sprawls over an area of 36 sq km with a number of tall buildings cluttering its hill slopes. It is situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level. Ooty still woos people from all over India as well as foreign countries right through summer, and sometimes in the winter months too. An added attraction for the tourists to Udagamandalam is the mountain train journey on a ratchet and pinion track which commences from Kallar, near Mettupalayam and wends its way through many hair-raising curves and fearful tunnels and chugs along beside deep ravines full of verdant vegetation, gurgling streams and tea gardens. |
